About Us

In 1947,

Beaverton boy Herb Peterson brought his Tennessee bride, Odie, back home to find 37 acres of the best loamy sand in the county upon which to plant his dreams. The dream was named Peterson Nursery.

In 1954,

They hired a 12-year-old boy to help in the fields. That young man learned to hoe out the bad and sow in the good. His name was Don Freeman and he became Herb & Odie’s business partner 10 years later.

In 1965,

Don bought out the Petersons and Peterson Nursery became Freeman Nursery.

In 1996,

The oldest Freeman kid, Kim, and her husband Mike Shea, bought the nursery from her parents. Mike & Kim and their four daughters and sons-in-law Cassaday & Taran Longstreth, Kennedy & Cody Cripps, Clarity, Century, and grandson Gibson, all play a part in the operation of the nursery. Kim‘s sister Lori Fischer and brother Joel Freeman, with the occasional help of parents Don and Connie Freeman, can all be found on the nursery wearing a pair of jersey gloves, with a hoe or a shovel or a watering hose in their hands.

Thank You

I thank you, Herb and Odie Peterson for planning these roots around me; Don Freeman for planting your work ethic within me; and the next generation of nursery women for inspiring me to keep this field of dreams growing.
